After being handed their first loss of the season on Saturday, the Scarborough
Royals went on a hitting binge to capture the OASA Peewee Ontario elimination
tournament in Oshawa. Needing to win seven straight, the Royals tallied 77 runs
while allowing only 10 as they prevailed by scores of 12-4; 14-1; 16-0; 15-0;
4-2; 8-0 and 8-3. Their task of needing to play and win six games in twelve
hours was simplified by both injuries and the weatherman. Key pitching injuries
forced both Bramalea and Orleans to go to into their pitching reserve and the
results were four and three inning mercy games to start. The hot humid weather
also left the area replaced by chilling winds, which proved to be less taxing
on the Scarborough squad, who were forced to play the entire day with only nine
players due to injuries and other obligations.
Scarborough relied on the heavy artillery as several players hit over the fence
home runs. The superb demonstration of power was led by Andy Skelton, Taylor
Potma and Aaron Chambers, all of whom went deep at least twice during the tournament.
Andy Skelton was called upon to pitch the team past Willowdale and he was able
to prevail despite the fact that Willowdale had base runners every inning. The
Willowdale pitching combination of Paul Matheson (a lefty) and right hander
Joey Bucci demonstrated in both their games against Scarborough that the big
bats of the Royals can be contained as they limited the Royals to six runs total
in both games. No other opponent allowed less than eight runs in their matches
against Scarborough.
In the first
game of the final, Waterloo left the bases loaded in the bottom half of the
first. With one out in the second, Taylor Potma cleared the left field fence
to open the scoring. Waterloo would open the second with a base runner following
an error by the shortstop, but the runner was quickly eliminated for violating
the lead off rule. This took all the wind out of the Waterloo team as Scarborough
plated single runs in the third and fourth, three in the fifth and two more
in the sixth to prevail eight to nothing. In the If game, Waterloo took advantage
of two first inning throwing errors by Skelton to take a short lived two run
lead. Scarborough answered with two in their half of the first as Skelton drove
home the first with a triple and then was awarded home when Waterloo was called
for an illegal pitch. The game was put out of reach in the second inning when
Scarborough scored four more on five hits including an over the scoreboard shot
by Andy Skelton. Waterloo would cut the lead to three in the third following
a throwing error. Scarborough completed the scoring by plating two more in the
fourth to capture the tournament championship.
Both Scarborough and Waterloo will now represent Ontario in Nova Scotia at
the Eastern Canadian Peewee Championships in August.
